Designing for player protection
Built for fans who are still enjoying it in ten years.
Media brands and sports have spent decades earning their audience's trust. When betting appears inside their app, channel or site, their name is on it. Funteron designs every betting experience so that trust grows rather than gets spent.

Where Betting Belongs · October 2026
In the fan's corner.
Play the long game. Put the fan first. Keith O'Loughlin on how thin margins, rising tax, tighter rules and non-stop advertising added up to a product fans need protecting from, and what putting the fan first would take: in the design, in the deal and in how success is measured. One promise runs through it: a fan should be able to stop betting and keep the sport.
The starting point
Betting is entertainment. Good design keeps it that way.
Most people who have a bet on sport do it for fun: a few quid on the match, a sweepstake on the National, a bet with mates. A small number get into trouble. How a product is designed has a lot to do with which way it goes.
Fans who bet are adults, and Funteron treats them that way. It is not here to lecture anyone or decide for them. Its job is to put the facts in front of a fan clearly, make the sensible choice the easy one and keep the sport at the centre of it all.
The audience is the asset. A media brand or rights holder has a duty of care to the people who follow it. A fan who has a bad night with a bet does not blame the bookmaker's back office. They remember whose app it was.
So the commercial case and the protection case point the same way. Funteron's model is built on lots of fans having small, enjoyable bets on the sport they already love, over many seasons. It does not need anyone to bet more than they meant to.
How Funteron designs for it
Protection is a design decision, made on every screen.
These are the rules Funteron designs and tests its products against. You can see most of them working in the Strata Live and FANtastic TV demos.
The whole cost, before anything happens
Before a bet goes on, the fan sees what it costs in total, what comes back if it wins and what they lose if it does not. Each way says "two bets, so it costs double". A Lucky 15 says "fifteen bets". Nobody finds out the real cost in the last box on the slip.
Plain words, every time
Money, not odds, by default. "Who will win?" instead of 1X2. A fan who understands a bet can make a proper decision about it. A fan who does not understand it cannot. Clear language is one of the simplest protections there is.
The sport comes first
News, scores, stats and the live moment lead. Betting is an optional layer on top, never the front door. A fan can follow the whole season without ever being asked to bet.
Chance, without the money
Any fan can switch betting off and still see how likely each outcome is, along with free picks and points. Where betting is not legal, or not wanted, that is all they see.
Off means off
An under-age answer is final. A fan who takes a break sees no prices, no offers and no betting words until it ends. Not a smaller button. Nothing.
Limits before the first bet
A weekly limit is offered before the first bet, not buried in settings. Lowering it is instant. Raising it takes 24 hours. Reality checks, a 24-hour break and the helpline stay one tap away on every betting screen.
Offers with the catch in one sentence
Free bets and price boosts sit in one clearly labelled place, each with its terms in a sentence a fan can actually read. Nothing is ever described as risk-free.
Honest results
A bet that returns less than its stake never says "You won". Losses are shown as clearly as wins. A bet is never placed twice and its status is never a mystery.
Built for everyone
Text that scales to 200%, strong contrast and buttons big enough for unsteady hands. Designed and tested against realistic personas, from a first-timer to a fan at risk of losing control.
Woven into the sport
A bet works best when it belongs to the moment.
A bet that sits inside the sport, next to the news, the scores and the commentary, is a different thing from a bet chosen from an endless menu. Funteron uses the sport's own rhythm to keep betting in proportion.
Follow, predict, bet
Three levels. Follow the sport for free. Make free predictions for points with no cash value. Bet only if you are an eligible adult who wants to. Most fans will live happily in the first two.
The sport only
Funteron shows bets on sport and nothing else. The fan stays with the match they came for and is never moved on to casino games.
Fewer, better markets
A curated set of simple markets that suit each sport, chosen with the partner. Too much choice is confusing, and confusion is where mistakes happen. Fans who want everything can still find it with their bookmaker.
New bets, made for fans
Fun bets built around what fans already talk about, such as who sets the fastest lap or who makes the most overtakes. Simple to follow and settled while you watch.
Fast markets, with care
The faster a market repeats, the more care it needs. Live prices pause around big moments, and quick-fire markets come with the same limits and checks as everything else.
The partner's standards on top
Each media brand or rights holder can set its own rules on top of the bookmaker's: which sports, which markets, how offers appear and the parts of its product where betting never shows up at all.
Who does what
Clear roles. No gaps.
Funteron sets no odds, holds no funds and accepts no bets. Every bet is placed with a bookmaker licensed in the fan's market, and nobody can bet until they have passed that bookmaker's checks. Protection works best when everyone knows their part.
| Who | Their part in protecting the fan |
|---|---|
| The bookmaker | Holds the licence, the account and the money. Runs age, identity and affordability checks before anyone can bet. Provides deposit limits, time-outs, reality checks and self-exclusion, and takes part in GAMSTOP in Great Britain. |
| The media brand or rights holder | Owns the audience and the relationship. Decides where betting appears, where it never does and which sports and markets to carry, and sets the standards that sit on top of the bookmaker's own. |
| Funteron | Designs the experience the fan sees: the words, the screens, the limits and the moments that matter. Works with its bookmaker partners on player protection and is building its own controls on top of theirs for the betting placed through its platform. |
The long game
Great relationships with fans are built over seasons, not weekends.
That is what Funteron helps media brands and rights holders do: give their fans a bet that is simple, fun and fair, inside a brand they trust, in a way that keeps them coming back for the sport.
